The French named one of best restaurants in UK in Good Food Guide

Chef Simon Rogan's The French restaurant has been named one of the best in the UK in the new edition of the Waitrose Good Food Guide.

For the second year running the restaurant, in The Midland in Manchester, has achieved an 8/10 rating in the acclaimed guide, ranking it number 14 in the UK.

And it is the only restaurant in Greater Manchester to feature in the top 50.

The French ranks higher than Simon's most recent opening, Fera in Claridges Hotel in London, which gets a 7/10 rating in the new guide, placing it at number 19 in the UK.

Meanwhile Simon's L'Enclume eatery in Cumbria retains its place at number one in the list after achieving a flawless 10/10 rating.

It means Rogan can claim three restaurants in the top 20 of the guide - an impressive achievement for any chef.

Since taking over The French in 2013, Simon has scooped a plethora of top foodie awards alongside his head chef at the venue, Adam Reid.

"Everything the team does at The French is in pursuit of higher standards, consistency and customer care and I'm very proud of my chefs and the front of house brigade," says Simon.

"The solid 8/10 rating really is a reflection of all the continued focus and hard work we have been undertaking at The French every single month."

The opening of The French was the subject of BBC documentary Restaurant Wars earlier this year, which followed the ambitions of Simon and Manchester House's Aiden Byrne to win a Michelin Star for the city - those rankings are due to be made public next month.

The new Waitrose Good Food Guide is published on September 8.
