Gyms, roof terraces and Richard Branson: Britain’s ideal workplace revealed

From games rooms to personal conversations, QHotels' survey uncovers Britain's biggest workplace desires and irritations

Britain's ideal workplace would be run by Richard Branson, include a gym and a roof terrace, and ban pointless meetings, a new survey from QHotels suggests.

The award-winning four-star hotel chain commissioned a YouGov survey to look into people's attitudes towards their workplace, including what their biggest annoyances are, as well as the features they would love. QHotels, which topped the Which? survey of best UK Hotel Chains was keen to get an insight into office workers' mindsets in an effort to further enhance its services.

Pointless meetings topped the list of work annoyances (52%), followed by control of the office temperature/air conditioning (29%) and loud, personal conversations (26%). Music being played out loud (16%), co-workers invading a personal workspace (20%) and sending emails to the whole company (24%) also came high on the list. Just 11% of workers said they had no biggest workplace annoyances.

When respondents were asked what would feature in their ideal workplace, gyms were the most popular choice (44%), closely followed by a roof terrace (33%), a massage room (27%) and a games room (26%). For younger workers, a gym was most desired - 56% of 18 to 24-year-olds chose this option.

When asked to choose from a list of who their ideal boss would be, Virgin's Richard Branson was the boss people would most like to work for, coming away with over a quarter of the votes (28%).

When asked about workplace satisfaction, it appears that the majority are either 'very satisfied' or 'fairly satisfied' (54%) with their work environment. Just 5% said they were 'very dissatisfied'.

Claire Rowland, Director of Marketing at QHotels, said: "It's understandable that when people work several hours each day together annoying habits can start to grate. Leaving the normal office environment, even for just a few hours, can go a long way to improving relationships between co-workers and increasing productivity.

"Whilst we can't confirm that Richard Branson will be on-site, we have roof terraces, gyms and massage rooms covered at many of our 21 four-star hotels! These superb facilities are a great option for those who are looking for time out from day-to-day workplace annoyances."

"QHotels was accredited with top honours at the VenueVerdict Brand Awards, including the Gold Standard Group Award and the number one Large Group Award, so our customers can be assured we have everything they need to bring the best out in their staff if they do decide to take time out of the office."
