Stratford MP Targets Olympic Legacy

Stratford Archery Centre met its local MP Nadhim Zahawi last week when he dropped in to see the facility, discovered the Olympic Legacy work being delivered, and learned about the championship-winning progress being made by two local archers.
Based at the Stratford Manor Hotel, the visit was organised by the House of Commons as part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Plan, which harnesses the United Kingdom's passion for sport, increases grass roots participation, particularly by young people, and encourages the UK population to be more physically active.
The Stratford-on-Avon MP met with centre director Paul Hadley who is overseeing the legacy works, Caitlin McCarthy (17, Royal Leamington Spa Archery Society)- Warwickshire and National Champion, and Archery GB team member, and Rebecca Upton (14, Stratford Archers)- Warwickshire Champion, West Midlands Junior Ladies Champion, and UK record holder.
Commenting on the Archery Centre and Olympic legacy Mr Zahawi said:
"It was great to see the Olympic legacy work being delivered right here in Stratford. Not only is the Archery Centre giving members of the public a chance to try out their skills, but it is also supporting three local clubs and encouraging national and international tourists and visitors to have a go"

"From what I've seen today it is clear that our local leisure industry and the Olympic Legacy is in good shape. Businesses and projects like this have an important role to play in re-balancing our economy and delivering jobs, fitness and wellbeing, particularly to young people and school leavers. Stratford Archery Centre and Caitlin and Rebecca are a perfect example of what can be achieved with dedication and hard work"

And commenting on his own attempts at archery he continued:
"I've only shot a few arrows and already I'm hooked. It's truly a sport that everyone can have a go at and I'd urge people to go try it. Hopefully we'll see some more Team GB members and top-notch archers coming out of Stratford and joining the ranks of Caitlin and Rebecca."
