In a bid to boost delegate's eco credentials the hotel group is
trialling its 'Pedal Power' eco initiative at Forest Pines Hotel
and Golf Resort near Lincolnshire in an attempt to hit QHotels'
annual energy reduction target.
Delegates will be required to continuously pedal with the
bicycle generator to convert 100 watts of energy in order to power
enough electricity to charge a laptop - the equivalent to a gentle
race up a hill. The bicycle generator operates in a similar way to
a wind turbine with the magnetic force passing through coils of
wire to generate power.
A recent survey of QHotels delegates found that 55% deem
environmental credentials important and are eager to give back to
the community and the pedal power
generator is a simple and fun way to power a conference
presentation - as well as keeping fit.
Sustainable energy is a key focus at QHotels, and this new
package is one of many steps being taken to lower energy
consumption. The hotel group works hard to achieve its CSR
objectives and has recently come runner-up in the 2013 Cateys
Sustainable Business Award. QHotels' already has an impressive
trophy cabinet, and has extended this further after Forest Pines'
recent gold accreditation in the Green Business Tourism Scheme
(GTBS). This takes QHotels' cabinet to 10 gold awards and 12 silver
awards for the national sustainable tourism certification
QHotels' Director of Property, Philip King said: "At QHotels we
are committed to saving energy and providing an
environmentally-friendly setting for guests and delegates. We have
listened to delegates' feedback and, given that environmental
issues are high on the agenda for our delegates, we ensure we try
new initiatives and find ways to support their aims as well as our
"We are always looking for new ways to improve our eco
credentials and it is great that an awards body as prestigious as
The Cateys acknowledges our efforts."
QHotels remains committed to sustainability, last year electric
car charging posts were installed at six hotels and the hotel group
signed up to WRAP's Hospitality and Food Service Agreement - aiming
to cut food and associated packaging waste throughout the UK. In
2011 the brand was also proud to be awarded the AA Eco Hotel Group
Todays, QHotels, a collection of 21 unique hotels, is proud to
announce that it is offering a new eco experience for businesses,
giving its conference, training and event delegates the chance to
provide electricity for their meetings through pedal power.
