Crewe Hall is a Jacobean mansion located
near Crewe in Cheshire and celebrated 400 years since the
first brick was laid in 2016. Built between 1615 and 1636
for Sir Randolph Crewe, it was one of the
county's largest houses in the 17th century, and was said to have
"brought London into Cheshire".
The hall was extended in the late 18th century and extensively
restored by architect E. M. Barry - son of
Charles Barry who built Westminster Palace and Highclere Castle of
Downton Abbey fame - after a fire in 1866. It is considered
among his best works, alongside the Royal Opera House in Covent
