A Q&A with Andrew Fox, General Manager of Slaley Hall

Welcome back to QHotels! How are you finding being at Slaley Hall

It really is an inspirational place.  The drive to work, even in the snow, sets the day up perfectly.  Whilst there is a challenge in managing such a complex business with so many different guest types and expectations, the team are so proud of the place that once the advance planning is done, delivering memorable, personalised service for guests is the primary focus.  Aside from the team, I am often the only person in a suit, everyone is on holiday or embracing the 'get away from it all' corporate events.
How long have you been in the hotel industry for?

Over 25 years, starting with the North East based Swallow Hotels, to time spent with Marriott, Crowne Plaza and of course the Midlands Regional Manager role with QHotels.
What are Slaley Hall's USPs and what do you think makes you stand apart from the crowd?
The management team recently created our positioning statement; a 'beautiful resort set in rural Northumberland, with exceptional facilities & award winning golf, with a passion for food & individual service'.  We really feel we lead the field in terms of our competitors in this respect.  The vision is for customers and staff to view Slaley Hall  as 'Your Resort in the North'; a more emotional attachment which drives loyalty and advocacy.  We're surprisingly only 25 minutes from the airport - closer than people think yet it feels like a million miles away from the hustle and bustle.
You've recently had investment at the resort, what can you tell us about this?
The hotel last year saw a £1m investment which really goes to show QHotels' commitment to enhancing an already amazing resort.  We saw our Wi-Fi increase from 9mbps to 90mbps making it ten times stronger, faster and more capable.  Our meeting rooms were refurbished which has led to very positive delegate feedback.  Our bedrooms too have had a facelift, 58 in total, so guests can now choose from the Old Hall with period features and four poster beds or a more modern room overlooking our championship golf courses.
Which is your favourite (with the exception of Slaley Hall!) hotel in the QHotels portfolio and why?

Apart from my previous base, Chesford Grange, I love Norton Park. The drive approaching the hotel, the old house and its layout for leisure and corporate guests. The barn is a perfect venue for a special event.
What do you like to do in your spare time?

I've just bought a chainsaw! I've also bought a new house with far too many trees so lots of garden fires, chain saw in one hand, a beer in the other!
Take some time to look round the hotel for yourself, view their new video here.
