Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week

To mark the 10th National Apprenticeship Week and the positive impact apprenticeships have on individuals and companies, we caught up with our Group Resourcing Manager, Lisa Redding.

Here's what she had to say about apprenticeships at QHotels and the training opportunities available for young people.

  • In 2016 QHotels launched its Get Into Q apprenticeship programme
  • The group recruited 52 new apprentices, in addition to the 145 team members already undertaking an apprenticeship
  • QHotels is aiming to recruit 100 new apprentices during 2017

There has been a huge skills shortage in the hospitality industry for some time - something which QHotels is addressing by investing in training and nurturing our employees.

The approach is driven from the top down in our organisation. Our MD Michael Purtill is extremely passionate about providing non-traditional routes into the industry and is a great believer that there's more than one path to a successful career in hospitality.

We believe that, if we find the right people, with the right attitude, and provide them with the right opportunities, we can teach them the necessary skills and expertise to fulfil roles at all levels within the organisation.

The most important aspect is identifying candidates that have personality, a natural intuition for customer service and that are driven and passionate about the industry.

So how do we deliver on this approach? In 2016 we launched our Get Into Q apprenticeship scheme, with opportunities to work in all areas of the business, from front of house, to events and food and beverage.

We were delighted to be recognised for our successful launch and approach to apprenticeships, having recently received 'Best Recruitment Initiative' and 'Education & Industry Partnership' in the Springboard UK Awards, along with a HR Distinction Award for Developing Future Talent.

This National Apprenticeship Week, QHotels is involved in over 40 events, supporting schools, colleges, Jobcentres and training providers to raise the profile of apprenticeships in general, as well as within QHotels.

Through our different programmes, we have a strong reputation for the quality of our training and development and, at the same time, understand the importance of our role in tackling the industry's skills gaps.
