The Scottish Amputee Open Golf Championships 2006 at the Westerwood Hotel
Monday 14th August 2006
From Monday 14th August until Friday 18th August 2006 The Westerwood Hotel and Golf Centre, Cumbernauld, will be home to the Scottish Amputee Open Golf Championships 2006. The event is sponsored by The Murray Foundation; founded by David Murray, Scottish born entrepreneur, businessman and Chairman of Rangers Football Club.
Competitors taking part in the tournament are all amputees - absent a limb from a major joint, either as a result of an accident, an illness or from birth. There are sixty-eight competitors from all over the UK, Australia, Canada, Isle of Man, South Africa and the USA who will tee off on the stunning Westerwood course, designed by Seve Ballesteros and Dave Thomas, nestled at the foot of the The Kilsyth and Campsie Hills.
General Manager of The Westerwood, Nic Oldham, says: “There is always such a buzz at Westerwood during tournaments; the whole Hotel really comes to life. Westerwood is a beautiful and challenging course, perfect for a tournament and it’s a privilege for us to be hosting the Scottish Amputee Open Golf Championship.”
Geraldine McDiarmid (Event Director) says: “Westerwood is a stunning location for Golf and The Hotel staff have been fantastic in their support in organising the event.”
The course itself challenges every shot imaginable in the game of golf and is certain to push competitors skills to the absolute maximum. The Westerwoods signature hole is the par 3 15th. At 165 yards from the medal tee, it is by no means the longest hole in the world but the green is surrounded by trouble and will punish any errant tee shots. The 60-foot cliff face behind the green sets up competitors nicely for that spectacular approach.
The Westerwood, part of QHotels Group, is benefiting from a £5 million investment that will see the refurbishment of the whole hotel including new conference facilities and additional bedrooms.
