Telford Invites 'Lefties' to Take Part in The Sinistrals Open
Tuesday 1st May 2007
Telford Golf and Country Club Hotel, part of the QHotels group, is pleased to announce that they will once again be welcoming left-handed golfers from around the country to The Sinistrals Open, England’s only Open Competition for left-handers, on Sunday 1st July 2007.
Telford Golf and Country Club hotel launched the event 6 years ago and it has become increasingly popular year on year. Left handed golfers from all over the country will be showing off their skills over 18 holes in the full handicap Stableford competition on Telford’s 6741 yards white course.
Ian Lucas, Golf Secretary at Telford says,
“It is great to be organising the Sinistrals tournament again this year, - It has always been a great event and a really enjoyable day. It is thought that around 10% of the population is left-handed, however you won’t be disqualified from the Sinistrals Open if you’re right handed, as long as you play left. Many of the well known left-handed golf players are predominately right-handed in all other activities except golf; two examples are Mike Weir who won the US Masters in 2003 and Phil Mickelson who won in 2004.”
The 6761 yard, par 72 championship course was built by renowned architects John Harris and Brian Griffiths and the attractive 170 acre parkland course features strategically placed water hazards and tree lined fairways. The undulating greens are laid on a suspended water table system, the same as Augusta, home of the US Masters, and Telford Golf and Country Club hotel was the setting for Ian Woosnam’s first Pro Tournament win.
Telford Golf and Country Club hotel was added to QHotels portfolio of 21 hotels in November 2006. QHotels have since pledged a significant investment of over £5 million into upgrading the venue in line with the luxury 4-star deluxe standards of the QHotels group, which includes Forest Pines Golf and Country Club Hotel in North Lincolnshire and Aldwark Manor near York.
The refurbishment, which is due to begin in the Spring (subject to planning and listed building consent), will see a substantial upgrading of all areas at the hotel, including the bedrooms, public areas, conference and event facilities, golf shop and changing rooms and the leisure facilities. There are also plans to further enhance the golf course over the next three years.
