Last Tango in The Trafford?

…no, but it was the first!
Manchester’s world-renowned hotel The Midland is currently enjoying a £15 million makeover that promises to emphasise the glamour and elegance of the hotel fondly known as ‘the Grand Old Lady’.
Part of the refurbishment has seen one of The Midland’s better known features return to the role for which it was originally created.
The Trafford restaurant, which was historically the setting for the first Tango danced in England and has for many years been the main dining room of the Hotel, is to return to previous form and is now a function room available to hire for up to 200 guests.
Thanks to The Midland reclaiming another of its restaurants, which until very recently was privately leased as Nicos, the Hotel has a new restaurant to offer to patrons and non-residential diners, thereby freeing up The Trafford for the special occasions it merits.
Now people can utilise The Trafford for events, dinners and private parties, and they will have to go a long way before they find somewhere that can match the history and character of this special function room.
In the days when Elgar & Strauss were top of the pops The Trafford, or The Music Room as it was once known, was a place for ladies and gentlemen to enjoy elegant tea dances, and it was at one such event that the Tango made it’s debut in England.
General Manager of The Midland, Mike Magrane said: “The Trafford is a wonderful establishment, it plays a major part in the heritage of the Hotel. It’s a special room that boasts an enviable history, playing host to a medley of who’s who throughout the years with many fond memories. It’s great that we are now able to offer the room for business & private functions, and it also lends itself perfectly as a wedding venue.”
The Trafford is now operating solely as a self-contained function room, catering for up to 200 guests.
