Ladies in Red (wine)

Tuesday 1st November 2005

On the evening of 17th November, 150 of Yorkshire Forward’s ‘Forward Ladies’ will be bringing back Beaujolais Day in style with a wine tasting and evening of celebrations at the Queens Hotel in Leeds, part of the QHotels group.

Every year Beaujolais Day falls on the third Thursday in November, and has been celebrated for centuries as the first opportunity to taste the Beaujolais wines on the day of their release from the French Vineyards. Traditionally the Beaujolais red grape is thought to produce the nearest red to a white wine, often favoured by ladies. The Queens and Forward Ladies are taking advantage of this by celebrating in style.

Deborah Heather, Director of Sales at the Queens Hotel said: “This is such a great day, it seems to have dropped out of fashion in recent years and we are looking forward to bringing it back”.

The Forward Ladies will sample three Beaujolais Nouveau’s: Beaujolais Blanc, Beaujolais Rosé and Beaujolais Villages Nouveau 2005. The wines are from Pardon et Fils in the town of Beaujeu and last year won gold medals for their Nouveau and Villages Nouveau wines in 2004. As well as the wine the ladies are to enjoy a talk from the highly esteemed wine expert Douglas Harrison, of Harrison Vintners.

Etta Cohen of Forward Ladies said: “We have never celebrated the historic Beaujolais day together, so we are really excited about getting together to sample the new flavours for this season, have a lot of fun and hopefully learn a little too!”
