Celebrate Leeds at The Queens

Thursday 13th September 2007

Get the date in your diary as the event of the year, Leeds 800th Birthday Party, is to be held on Saturday10th November at the city’s landmark hotel, The Queens, which is owned by Leeds based QHotels.

Celebrate Leeds 2007, the Yorkshire Evening Post and The Queens hotel have teamed up to put on this spectacular event to celebrate 800 years since the opening of the first road, Briggate, creating the borough of Leeds on the 12th November 1207. It is also a double celebration for The Queens hotel as they celebrate their 70th Birthday on the same day.

Leader of Leeds City Council Councillor Andrew Carter says:

“It is fantastic that The Queens is involved in the city’s year-long celebrations. It is great that Celebrate Leeds 2007 includes everyone, from community-based events to the biggest attractions and landmarks.”

The Lord Mayor and local celebrities will be among the guests at the black tie event, which will be held in the elegant surroundings of the Queens Ballroom. The evening will begin with a champagne reception and then guests will be treated to a delicious 4-course dinner made with the finest Yorkshire ingredients and prepared by The Queens Executive Head Chef and his exceptional team . Throughout the evening guests will be have the opportunity to give something back with lots of entertaining fundraising opportunities to help raise money for a local charity.

The local history behind The Queens hotel has made it the ideal choice of venue for Leeds Birthday party. 70 years ago The Yorkshire Post reported that the opening of The Queens hotel marked a milestone in the development of Leeds, and they reported that no other more important individual site had been developed since the building of the town hall in the 1850’s.

The Queens hotel has stood proud in Leeds City Square since 1937 and is one of the flagship hotels of QHotels. In 2005 they underwent a massive £11 million restoration and refurbishment programme that restored the hotel to its original art deco grandeur.

Mark Platt, General Manger of The Queens hotel says;

“We are delighted to be involved with the Leeds 800th Birthday celebrations. The Queens is proud to be able to show our support and commitment to the city of Leeds, and we look forward to celebrating along side other Leeds businesses at this prestigious event’’.
