Why Support Cancer Research and Why Now?
A word from our team leader..
Cancer Research is not only a very worthy cause, but without their research, my mother’s full recovery from bowel cancer 18 months ago may well have not been possible. Cancer is probably the most common life-threatening disease that we'll all come across in our lifetimes, either directly or indirectly, so if 'giving to charity' is not necessarily your thing, then see this as a small contribution to a lifetime personal insurance policy. If you, your friends or your family have been affected in some way, then this is your ideal opportunity to give something back at our physical expense !!
Having completed the national three peaks (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowden) last year and felt the pain for weeks after, my conscience was pricked when asked whether I had raised any money for charity. The honest answer was no. So, with a New Years Resolution of completing a hike that would be challenging enough (one that would get more responses of “you’re mad!” rather than just “best of luck”) and raising money for charity, I have set about finding such a hike along with a suitable team of like-minded(?) volunteers.
About the challenge..
The hike is on 16th - 17th May and stretches over 24 of the highest peaks in the Lake District (all over 2,400 ft), 19 of which are among the 50 highest peaks in England. Collectively their height is over twice the height of Everest. We'll actually walk up AND down the equivalent of half the height of Everest, and should cover a minimum of 31.7 miles (assuming we don’t get lost), AND the aim is to complete all of the above in just 24 hours, which means a heck of lot of fell-top walking in the dead of night (perhaps that's a bad choice of words - uh oh!).
On top of the hike, the biggest challenge we've set ourselves is to raise £30,000 for Cancer Research.
Please please help us
Yes, it all comes down to a plea for cash! If you are kind enough to sponsor us then please click the LARGE BUTTON below to be directed to our Just Giving web page. Doing so gives you the opportunity to ask the government to automatically sponsor us too to the tune of 28% of your contribution. As a further incentive, we'll give a prize to the nine people whose guess' are closest to the actual number of collective steps taken by the team members who finish the hike (five will start) – type your answer in the Competition section below.
If you work for a corporate that likes to sponsor worthy charitable events, then we're more than delighted to accept any sizable contributions. In addition, we're happy to promote all our corporate sponsors as part of the hike. Please email me if your corporate would like to be promoted as part of this event.
So its on with the training and the all-important fund raising.
Many thanks in anticipation

The height of all fells is 63,971 ft, so 2.2 times Everest. Everest is 29,028 ft, our hike is therefore 50.5% up Everest AND 50.5% down Everest. It's the equivalent of climbing Ben Nevis 3.3 times plus a 32 mile walk. 19 of fells are in England’s top 50, including the highest Scafell Pike at 3,209 ft (pictured above). The walk is the same as walking up and down the stairs at home 1,600 times and then walking 1.3 marathons in 24 hours
The Competition
To enter our competition try to guess the total number of collective steps taken by the team members who finish the hike (minimum donation to take part in the competition is £10). Pedometers will be worn by each walker. The calculation will be the sum total of all pedometer readings of every team member who completes the hike, regardless of the time taken. The Team leaders decision is final.
